Droidy

I was never into phones until I had a Blackberry. The reason I switched to an Android is for the bigger screen and the better apps. I loved my Blackberry, but it was not fulfilling my needs. I know it sounds weird to some of you, but alot of people treat their phones like another person. My friend Anita was obsessed with her Blackberry (BB) when she got it years ago, and I could not understand what the big deal was. One night when I was over, she was talking to me and holding her bb at the same time but her eyes were not on me LOL. I asked her "What is so special about a bb?" She told me it was faster than a regular phone, there was also BBM and themeing! Anita then showed me her phone and she had some cute Hello Kitty (HK) wallpaper (wallie)with the HK icons. I was in LOVE, and my search for my very own BB began.

I got the BB Curve from Sprint, and it was heaven for me! I discovered this themeing world, with thousands of blogs that just gave FREE themes for any kind of bb. I had Nancydrew Themes, Mellyberry Themes and Themes4bb.com to help switch my themes daily. There was so many to choose from, the colors, characters, movies, cartoons, etc. I was obsessed and I looked like a bb zombie just like Anita. I woke up in the morning and checked my phone first before I checked on my children LOL. My mom hated having conversations with her because I never made eye contact. The iphone never interested me that much, but the Android was calling my name. And I did not want to cheat on my BB curve. So I went to a Target store and was browsing their phones. I had already heard about the HTC Evo4g from Sprint, I saw the screen and I was in LOVE again! I thought the itouch screen was big, yeah right that was an infant compared to my new HTC Evo4g.

I liked how fast it was and the HD. The web is super fast, way faster than a BB. It didnt have BBM and I could not theme--so I thought. Well the BBM is only for BB, but I could still theme. Learning how to theme a BB is easier than a Android in my opinion. For a BB you just download the ota and your done. The icons are customized and the wallie is done for you. When it comes to a Android its a little more complicated, in the begining I could not find blogs on how to theme a Android. Then I heard about rooting! Yea so rooting sounds like phone talk, and it is. Rooting is when you jail break your phone. From my point of view its like my phone is in jail! I am only allowed to use 200mb of its memory, even though the full capacity is 400mb! I was not using my phone to its full potential. Once I rooted my phone and picked a ROM for it, it was OVER! The speed, the graphics, screenshots, etc....... Their is still things I have not accomplished with my Evo.  I love my phone, its just so amazing and everyday I learn something new.

Ok back to the theming, I finally found some people who helped me theme my phone. I still have lots to learn but this is a great begining. I really follow 2 main blogs and they are sandyblackberrythemes and emarsha <<<< she does iphones as well. On twitter I follow alot of droid users and we help one another out. SevereDeceit on twitter helped me with the apps I needed to make my phone look so pretty. So now I am content, and yes there have been other Androids that have come out and seem attractive. But I am devoted to my droidy I don't have eyes for any other.

The Apps on my phone are mostly widgets and you can find in the market:
  • Simple Text
  • Simple Calendar
  • SiMi Folder
  • Wallpaper Wizardrii
  • HK bow is from Sandy's Photobucket page on her blog

Mic Check, Mic Check

I remember when I was a student at Bronx Community College, in my third semester I was taking a speech class. And I remember this girl who stood out in the crowd, she was pretty, and her wardrobe was on point! I thought to myself "Here goes another stuck up". As I looked around the class, I realized I was not the only chick giving her the side eye. But like they say "You can't judge a book by it's cover". As the class progressed and we all got to know one another, Talisha turned out to be a very cool chick! She had a smile that was magnetic, and a personality to go with it.

One of our speeches that we had to give was about our career choices, and how and why we were going to accomplish them. I remember her speech vividly, because it was a good one and her face lit up when she discussed her future plans. She wanted to be a Radio DJ Host, and she had a plan to become just that. Fast forward to today and she is a co-host of a up coming web radio show called "That DAM Web Show" and she is doing her thing as a multimedia journalist. I interviewed her a few weeks ago about the show and what's in store for them next! Future interviews with Sammy Lee and Danielle Moore will be coming up soon!

Here is the link to the youtube channel of "That DAM Web Show" and Facebook.

Q. Tell me a little bit about "That Dam Web Show"?

A. That Dam Web Show is a hip and urban show enriched with entertainment yet informative information that is delivered by lively & friendly personalities.

Q. When will you have a website up?

A. Our goal is to have our website launched by February which is when the first season of our show begins. The episodes we worked on putting together for November was actually a sneak peak to the viewers on what to expect from us when we do begin our first season.

Q. What made you come up with the concept of “That Dam Web Show”?

A. Well, the concept of “That Dam Web Show” was created by my co-host Danielle. Danielle use to have her own web show and the name of her web show was “That Dam Web Show” because the letters D.A.M spell out her initials. We kept the name to the Web show because it's catchy and clever at the same time.

Q. What are some topics that you hope to talk about on your show?

A. I don't want to spoil the fun and give out the specific topics we plan on covering but one thing I can say is that what we have are upcoming explosive and trending topics, so I recommend that everyone stays tuned in for what's coming because things will get interesting! ;)

Q. What media outlets are you using to create the buzz for the show?

A. The media outlets we're using to create a buzz for the show are social networks such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, etc. We also attend to media events to greet and meet interesting, talented, successful individuals which gives us an opportunity to promote our web show.

Q. What do you think about women entrepreneurs today in 2011?

A. I think the women entrepreneurs from today in 2011 are a lot stronger and confident because women now have equal rights as men do. Women are realizing that we too can be as successful as entrepreneur men for example these women such as Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Oprah & Angelina Jolie are women who come from different backgrounds, play a different role in the world yet one thing they do have in common is their hard work ethic and their drive on always working on a project to make a difference on a daily basis.

Q. What is the best part of being a radio personality?

A. Ummm, I would say listening and being able to relate too many of the individuals that get to share their stories with me. Everyone is different and unique in their own little ways, so I learn and get the opportunity to indulge these inspiring experiences.

Q. What made you choose Radio Multimedia Journalism as a profession?

A. Through time I realized that I enjoyed meeting people, with positive energy and know their purpose in life. I also became conscious of how happy I would feel when I would make others laugh or knowing that with my personality I've made memories unforgettable, so I decided that I'd like to share my colorful personality with the world and create world-wide Colgate smiles lol.

Ladies of That DAM Web show (Danielle Moore, Sammy Lee, and Talisha Liburd)

Q. How is “That Dam Web Show” different from other web/radio shows?

A. What makes That Dam Web Show different from other web/radio shows is that the show is managed by three intelligent creative ladies, from different cultures and backgrounds, who want to entertain the world! Our purpose is to connect and build a friendly relationship with our guests and audience, basically serve as good host thru via Internet. :)

Q. Why is “That Dam Web Show” so important to you?

A. That Dam Web Show is important to me because it’s my dress rehearsal for my career lol. I want to be the next Angie Martinez, Miss Info or Lala! And I WILL BE! Lol The web show gives me the chance to show viewers who I am especially those who haven't taken the time to know me. My presence has been mistaken from people who have never met me as being a stuck up female when in reality I'm FAR from being that type of person. TRUST ME! To know me is to LOVE me and I could sincerely vouch for that.

Q. With all the competition out there, how will you manage to stay successful and unique?

A. I plan on remaining strong, confident and always believe in myself NO MATTER what. I also plan to continue working hard, remain consistent and not be afraid of delivering the ideas I have.

Q. What does your support system consist of ?

A. The support system for "That Dam Web Show" consists of talented well known individuals in the media industry. So far we are taking advantage of any offers that is presented to us and just make the best out of it.

Q. The expression “Have a dollar and a dream”, what does that statement mean to you?

A. The expression "Have a dollar and dream" to me basically means no matter the weather or what you have in life, you just have to run with it & try to make things happen for yourself in order to make your dreams come true.

Q. What is your target market?

A. ANYONE & and; EVERYONE!

Q. Where do you see “That Dam Web Show” five years from now?

A. I see us being the #1 web show that covers world-wide events with live and direct footage. We are the ladies any entertainment business would want to hire to host any exclusive events.

Q. Do you think women can have it all?

A. ANYONE could have it all in my opinion because what really determines that is the belief and faith you have in yourself. People need to remain ambitious AT ALL TIMES! Try it! And you'll thank me later lol j/k but no honestly staying positive brings success.

Well Done

Since my last blog I have been super busy. All of my children are in school and it’s very exciting but so hard at the same time. I say that because my oldest Anthony is in his senior year of HS and I want him to go out with a bang! My twins are in 3rd grade and they take their first state exam. Elias is in Pre-K and he has so much to learn in so little time. This year I have felt over extended as a parent than I have ever been before. I have switched my school schedule to nights so that I can be more involved with my kids during the day. I have been volunteering at their schools and it’s so much fun. For Elias he has a sense of pride when I volunteer and it affects him in positive way. Yes I might lose some sleep, and be cranky almost every day but I love it!

Motherhood never gets old, and it’s always on going. Yes we as moms get frustrated and angry, and want a drink most of the time. But it’s so freaking worth it!! I’m obsessed with my kid’s education; I make “mommy homework” every week. And I’m smiling when doing it LOL, my kids of course will not be laughing! As always the hard work does pay off for them. This past week they got to see me graduate from college, and I think that made an impact on them. Especially for my son Anthony since college is in his near future.

I graduated Friday 10/29/11 and I almost didn’t walk because my mom wasn’t here to see me. But I at least owed it to myself, and my family to walk with my fellow graduates. As I sat during the ceremony I had my mom on my mind the whole time. I was thinking OMG she was going to love the pictures and be blabbing about it to everyone.

I tried to imagine what her thoughts were going to be. And I came up with these:

1. She is PROUD of ME for graduating

2. She is proud that I completed another chapter in my life.

3. She finally got to see another one of her own graduate college.

4. She is so proud that even though I was a teen mom and I graduated High school; I was also able to graduate college.

I realize that my future will become complicated with more obligations of my own. But I’m a juggler, just like my mom was with 5 kids and having only one income. I always think about what she overcame when I myself feel like it’s all too much. She reminds me that I have to keep pushing through because I just have to.

Click Share

More and more every day I see that my fellow girlfriends are using Facebook as a platform to promote or sell their products. Women in general are becoming entrepreneur and are doing it on their own terms. They are using Facebook to do this. The times have changed when women used to go to banks to get loans, or just simply use word of mouth. Now with one click on the “Share” tab you can extend yourself and show what you’re selling to thousands. This trend is expanding everyday and women are having more opportunities to actually make a decent living doing something that they love; while able to maintain a home and be a full-time mom. Our “Hobbies” are becoming careers and success stories!

In our society women are doing more than ever in history. We are multi-tasking like never before, we each should have 10 arms for the daily “to-do list” we have. Men are not the hardest workers anymore, thanks to our technology that we have today women are just as hardworking or may I dare say even more! Women are using social outlets such as Facebook to make a living! We are able to work from home, and be around when our kids and husbands get home. Success is not guaranteed to everyone, but for those who have reached success, your dedication and hard work is paying off.

Like these women I will be talking about in my blog. They each have a unique story to tell, but they each have a happy ending. I will be featuring four women who are housewives/full-time moms and also have regular 9-5 jobs. They decided to start a business with no prior experience or funds to start it up. Facebook made it possible for them to just “Share” with others. With each click from their family members, their friends, and new people from all over they are experiencing a whole new world!

My first feature is my good friend Anita Rosario. She makes cakes and cupcakes from her own kitchen, not just regular cakes but art that is edible. She created Annie's Creations , and makes unique desserts for all ages. You’re guaranteed to never have experienced desserts like Annie's Creations! On one of her breaks, Anita took the time to answer some questions about her new found business and how she used Facebook to market her products.

Q. Tell me a little bit about Annie’s Creations?

A. Annie's Creations is a small cake business from my home in Bronx, NY, which I began back in June in 2010. I am also self-taught, meaning I did not take any courses in cake decorating, nor did I have someone teach me. Annie's Creations goals are to create cakes for people and help make their birthdays or events super special with something they will not forget.

Q. When I go on your website, how do I place an order?

A. When a potential client enters my website they can see pictures of my creations as well as get an idea of my prices. Once they are interested or have any questions they can just go to the tab "Contact me" and fill in the questionnaire. Once that is submitted I will get an E-mail right away and I will contact them from there.

Q. How long will it take you to respond?

A. Once I receive the E-mail, I will respond right away, either by their E-mail or phone depending which way they preferred me to contact them. I take my orders very seriously; my response to them in the timely manner shows my clients how responsible I am and how important their orders are.

Q. What made you come up with the concept of Annie’s Creations?

A. I have always loved art. I love to see art in pictures; I love to create art in general. I always loved watching the food network since I was very young. Always amazed on how the chef's will put together food and make it so delicious looking. When programs began to show how cakes were made I was in all. Until the summer of 2010, I decided to try it out and do it on my own. I started doing cakes for family and friends for free; it is when everyone will coach me to go into business doing them because I would be successful in it. I later took their advices! And Annie's Creations was created from all the love and support from my family and friends.

El Morro Cake

Q. What made you choose Facebook as your platform to promote your company?

A. I chose Face book because it is a great place to network. Not only because we all have friends that we do not actually see, be it from JHS or HS years or even employment. Face books gives you a great platform to promote a business by sharing your page, others doing the same and interact with your friends daily with updates, pictures and most of all they get to know you as a person as well.

Facebook Cake

Q. It’s a fact that women entrepreneurs are self-funded, and do not rely on bank loans or inventors. Why do you think that it’s vs. men who do the opposite?

A. In my opinion, I believe it is because as women we are taught at a young age to run a household, a family. In most cases the women is the one in charge of the billing of the household. We learn how to do finances, we learn how to keep order, and we learn how to handle any situation that comes our way. Not to knock on men, but the truth is that majority of the men are taught at an early age to be providers and that is all. It is why they are mostly working and have no idea what happens in the household. What it takes to keep it running with love, financially, and keep order.

Q. How many cakes are you averaging a week? A month?

A. Recently, I have been working on cakes every weekend ranging from 1-3 cakes due in one weekend. For example, for the month of October I have a total of 10 cakes for the whole month. There are busy months and there are months that I am booked and have to deny orders.

Q. What is so special about Annie’s Creations?

A. I have to say that many different things set me apart from others. At Annie's Creations the clients will get to communicate with me personally, I will help them the best I can to get exactly what they want, I am very flexible as well. And most importantly my prices, clients will get an amazing cake for a great price. I have had clients who priced around for the same cake and have come back to me because of my price. People could say well you get what you pay for in a negative way meaning if you pay for something at a cheap cost you will get a cheap looking cake and possibly not taste good either, but at Annie's Creations I make sure that the client gets what they pay for a very tasteful cake and designed to their liking.

Skateboard Cake

Q. Using Facebook to promote and sell your cakes, would you advise other women entrepreneurs to do the same?

A. I would totally advise other women to do the same, by creating a business page on Facebook. They would see the benefits right away, building a network from all over the world.

Q. What are the pros and cons of using Facebook to sell Annie’s Creations?

A. The pros using Facebook to sell would be that you can reconnect with so many people, and connect with new ones from all over the world. As well as becoming an inspiration for others.
Helping your business grow bigger and bigger. You can have contest providing potential customers with discounts and even freebies. The cons would have to be there are people out there that can steal your ideas and your pictures and claim it is theirs. Other than that I do not have many cons on using Facebook for my business.

Q. With all the competition out there, how do manage to stay successful and unique?

A. I welcome the competition; it’s what keeps me wanting to be unique. I stay successful through my personality, my honesty; my organization makes me very dependable. My clients know who they working with because I let my personality show with every consultation. I want my clients to feel comfortable with me and trust me with their order. And be able to approach me with any of their concerns. Having many of my clients who continue to come back to place orders and refer me to other people help me see how successful I have become.

Dr. Seuss Cake

Ann Taylor Cake

Q. Do you have any favorite cakes that you have made? If so, why?

A. I have many favorite cakes actually, not to say that I don’t like my other creations but I think as a cake decorator we all have our favorites. Mines would be the “Tinkerbell Cake” I had so much fun doing that cake….came out very cute and playful. Another cake I would have to say was my “Jack Daniels/Poker Cake” because the bottle came out so realistic. My cake of the “El Morro” this is because not only did I feel so proud to be able to represent a major part of my island of Puerto Rico but I was able to bring a little of Puerto Rico for the client. Just to mention one more favorite cake it would be my “Skateboard Cake” it was so cool to make something look so realistic with the wheels and all… but again I have fun working on all my cakes and enjoy their outcome.

Jack Daniels/Poker Cake

Q. What do your friends and family have to say for your new business and success?

A. My friends and family have been extremely supportive with my new business and of my success. I have had them even help me with some of my cakes. I thank them all for all their love and support because if it was not for them advising me to make this hobby into a business Annie’s Creations would have not existed.
Q. The expression “Have a dollar and a dream”, what does that statement mean to you?

A. You do not have to be a leader or a millionaire, just be a person capable to put some goals in front of you and successfully go for it. Once you have the talent you have the most important thing. Then you can do the research and go from there….Research and talents are free!

Q. How do you manage being a full-time mom, and wife? Now that you have this new business?

A. Managing all these jobs is extremely hard at times. But as a typical mother you learn how to manage your time. My kids at times help me with cakes, even though they love eating the fondant more than helping but it’s a time we have together that we can bond. They love to say “I helped mom with that cake”. As for my husband, who is extremely supportive helps a lot. He at times helps me with cakes as well, and always helps me with ideas, and is extremely proud of my success.

Q. What is your busiest season?

A. The busiest season is honestly around the summers and during the holidays.

Q. Where do you see Annie’s Creations five years from now?

A. Five years from now Annie’s Creations will be a full time running bakery located in New York.

Q. Do you think women can have it all?

A. Honestly, I do not think that women have it all. In my opinion we as women have come a long way. But it is still a man’s world that we live in. Society still has a conception that men are stronger, and have all the work ethics, because it has been like that for decades. Today women have slowly changed this by becoming the president of a big company, successfully starting their own business, also be able to prove that we are strong, maybe not physically against a man but strong in the mind, our will to succeed and we do whatever it takes to complete our goals.

Reporting Live...

It has been a very long time since I have made the time to sit and blog. The thought would cross my mind everyday. But I had other things to do. My weeks are full of school, kids, reality t.v. and fights with my "significant other".
I love school, its very hard but I love the challenge and the my hard work does pay off. I have made friends in school FINALLY..LOL. Living in Houston has been okay. But now that I actually friends it has been much better. Isolation was hard for me, just only talking to my friends in NY by phone, text, email, twitter and Face book. Now I get to actually speak to people face to face..finally human contact! My teacher Ms. Rand is awesome. She is a great teacher and a great person.
For my Spring Break I went to NYC for 10 days. It was so different going back. I felt closed in like I couldn't breathe. Living in Houston there is so much space and air. Traffic in NY was just annoying, and the constant construction everywhere. I thought I would have time to see everyone and I did not. I was disappointed about that, and I'm sure many of my friends were to. My mom was great, she was off from work so it was perfect. Being in her house was great! It felt weird, and the many dogs did not help me adjust right away. But I eventually did. I am looking forward to my mom coming in the Summer and staying awhile. Hopefully she will consider moving to Houston.
My kids are great. They constantly surprise me everyday. Just how their minds think..its just amazing. The twins are ending the 2nd grade in June and they love school. They have many friends, and they enjoy school. Parents here in Houston are more free with their kids. Like sleep overs are the norm. Without meeting other parents they allow their children to sleep over whom evers house. That to me is so scary. I guess I still have that NY mentality. So its hard for my children to understand that they can't stay over there friends house. My youngest is finally going to start school in August, and very nice one at that. I have been home schooling him so he is on point. It hasn't been easy but he is ready and excited to be among kids his own age. He is to mature sometimes for a 4 year-old. Due to being around his older siblings all the time. My oldest will be a senior soon, and he is finding his place in the world. I told him take your time. Live a little, stop being afraid and so rigid. He is working on that slowly but surely.
My personal life could be better. But it is what it is. I don't have time to focus on my "love life". It is not that important to me at this time in my life. I guess because I have been the only one giving a SHIT all these years and he has been just stagnated. So now that I have school and I finish in November of this year that is my first priority. It's my time to not give a fuck, and just be the selfish one. I have not been that person in a very long time. Sometimes good guys don't always WIN. And I am okay with that, this journey that I am on is for me and my family. I will pass by who ever I need to pass by! At my age, and all the experience I have had,  I always end up good. I survive, I always come out on top. My friends ask me all the time, "what are you going to do"? And my response is " keep moving, finish school, and just keep moving"!
